Tá taispeántas spéisiúl ar siúl faoi láthair (ar líne) a thugann léargas ar dhá scór bliain d’ealaín na Gaeltachta. Tá neart oibre spreagúil le feiscint ann ach ba mhaith liom díriú isteach ar phíosa amháin inniu. Is é sin an saothar ealaíne suiteála: “Geansaí Iascaire” le Seán Ó Flaithearta (thuas).

Is as Árann dó Seán Ó Flaithearta agus rinne sé staidéar sa Choláiste Náisiunta Ealaíne is Deartha i mBleá Cliath roimh dhul thar lear go dtí an Bheilg agus go Meiriceá le leanúint lena chuid staidéar.

Geansaí Iascaire - art installation by Sean O Flaithearta using periwinkles and rosary beads

Chruthaigh sé an saothar ealaíne seo sa bhliain 2011. Geansaí mór Árannach ar an talamh, é déanta as faochain. Má scrúdaíonn tú é níos cúramaí áfach, feiceann tú paidríní i measc na faochain. N’fheadar an machnamh ar chreideamh a mhuintir a bhí i gceist aige?  Machnamh ar ról an spioradáltacht i saol na n-iascairí, b’fhéidir?

Ach cén fáth ar thug an t-ealaíontóir scoradh don gheansaí (nó don chorp)?  Cén bhrí a bheadh leis an chréacht seo?

An raibh sé ag tarraingt aird ar cé chomh contúirteach is a bhí saol na n-iascairí nó an raibh sé ag plé le cúrsaí níos tromchúisí?  Seans go raibh imní air go bhfuil saol na Gaeltachta ag dul in éag.  Imní, nó fearg, b’fhéidir.  Rith sé liom gur ag tagairt don frása “cos ar bolg”  a bhí sé nuair a ‘ghoin’ sé an saothar. An é go gceapann sé nach bhfuil meas ar chultúr na Gaeltachta a thuilleadh? Chruthaigh sé an saothar seo sa bhliain 2011. An bhfuil cúrsaí níos fearr nó níos measa deich mbliana níos déanaí? Mar a dúirt an seanduine liath tráth: “M’anam, nach é an cruatan atá i gcónaí i ndán dosna Gaeil…?”

Agus muid ag trácht ar an Béal Bocht… seo prionta iontach san taispeántas céanna, le Deirdre McKenna as Ghaeltacht Chorca Dhuibhne.

Dath an Dóchais is a celebration of forty years of support by Údarás na Gaeltachta for the visual arts in the Gaeltacht regions of Ireland.  This online exhibition was curated by Úna Campbell and her team at An Gailearaí in Gaoth Dobhair, Co. Donegal and features artworks by forty Gaeltacht artists.

There are several outstanding works but I was particularly struck by “Geansaí Iascaire” (at the top of the page) by Seán Ó Flaithearta, an installation of periwinkles and rosary beads, from 2011.  There are plans to launch a physical exhibition in An Gailearaí, Gaoth Dobhair in the Autumn of 2021 and plans for touring the show in 2022.

In the meantime, I should mention that my own solo show Is glas iad na Cnoic has been extended at the Olivier Cornet Gallery until the 7th of June so you have one last chance to see it over the long weekend!

  1. Tá slí beatha na n-iascairí dá chur i mbaol ag an Aontas Eorpach agus anois ag Brexit agus tá gádh acu le paidir lena dheisiú. — Piaras
