Which is the fairest of them all?

Perhaps you know already that Co. Sligo is the most beautiful county in all of Ireland.  A bit of a photo essay for you today, my friends.

You probably know about the poet W.B. Yeats and his connections with Sligo, about the lake water lapping around the lake isle of Inishfree, about bare Benbulben’s head and about the clouds bundling high over Knocknarea…

And then there’s the mysterious megalithic sites of Carrowmore, Carrowkeel and Creevykeel. There’s Queen Maeve’s tomb and the place where the unfortunate Diarmuid was killed by a wild boar…

There’s the holy wells, the shady woodlands, the waterfalls, the glorious beaches… Did I mention Queen Maeve’s tomb?  Well, it’s still there alright, on the summit of Knocknarea, but it was completely shrouded in mist this time.

It was an eerie experience, making the ascent in the mist, it felt all the more magical because of the weather.

And speaking of magic and mystery, there is a deep, hidden glen on the lower slopes of Knocknarea. It is a long, narrow chasm that stretches for about a kilometre, clothed in the most luxuriant of vegetation, the oak, the hazel, the holly and honeysuckle dripping with leafy abundance, humming in unison to soothe the sylvan sprites and casting a dreamy spell on the unsuspecting visitor…

That’s it. I rest my case.  (Although I’m afraid that my photos simply can’t do justice to the enchanting feel of the place).

County Sligo

  1. I’m really looking forward to exploring this when I’m back home for good. I have never been to this place. And my many years of wandering abroad have only made me miss it more. Thanks for giving me a slice of your life.

  2. Bíonn éifeacht ag an tímpeallacht ar cruthú caraictéir na daoine i gCill áirne, Sligeach nó Áth Cliath. Tá Dia le fáil i ngach áit má osclaíonn muid ár súla. Piaras
