Rocky Ros Muc

Rocky Ros Muc, a heart-rending documentary about the Connemara boxer Seán Ó Mainnín, is the first ever Irish language film to be listed for an Oscar.

And this, in Bliain na Gaeilge, the year of the Irish language. (yes, I’ll have you know, 2018 has been especially designated as the year of the Irish language).

Now, tá mé cinnte go bhfaca go leor agaibh an scannán seo i rith na Nollag – muna raibh sé feicithe agaibh roimhe sin, ag an Galway Film Fleadh, b’fhéidir.

Agus ar ndóigh, bhí ócáid iontach anuraidh sa Chrannóg i Ros Muc nuair a bhí Rocky é fhéin i láthair ag taispeántas speisialta den scannán (nasc). Ní raibh mise ann an babhta sin agus go deimhin, ní raibh morán eolais agam faoin iardhornálaí cáiliúil seo go dtí go bhfaca mé an scannán um Nollaig.

Ach chorraigh an scéal go mór mé – thuig mé de réir a chéile an fáth go raibh muintir na h-áite chomh bródúil as Seán Ó Mainnín. Agus bhí eisean i gcónaí bródúil as Ros Muc. Ní ghlacadh sé le h-aon urraíocht mar gur thaistigh uaidh go mbeadh “Ros Muc” ar a bhrístí aige.

Laoch a bhí ann… ach ní raibh an t-áth leis.  Ní bheidh a leithéidí arís ann.

Molaim go mór an scannán seo. Má bhíonn seans eile agat, déan do dhícheall é a fheiscint! B’é Rónán Mac Con Iomaire an t-údar agus Michael Fanning an stiúrthóir.

Taking the white ship…

And Seán Ó Mainnín had a difficult enough life in Boston. The film charts his boxing career – right up to his world title bout – but it also explores the issues of emigration, identity and struggle. It’s a very human story.
