A year to remember…

Ar theacht an tSamhraidh – a film projection at Pearse’s Cottage, Ros Muc 2016

I’m wondering today if I should tell you a secret, something that very, very few people know about… but before that, I want to tell you about a book launch that happened at the GPO in Dublin recently.

It was Heather Humphreys TD, Minister for Culture, Heritage & the Gaeltacht who launched the new publication, a book that she had commissioned to document the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme.

The book is entitled: Centenary and it features “significant commemorative events in chronological order, at home and abroad, to mark this pivotal moment in Irish history”. And my art (see above) is included in this very book.

It was produced by the Royal Irish Academy (a tad ironic for a republic, you might say), it was edited by Ronan McGreevy and there is a foreword by Michael D. Higgins, Uachtarán na hÉireann.

Speaking at the launch Minister Humphreys said:  “I was determined from the outset that 2016 would be a year for everyone – I wanted to encourage and facilitate commemorative events which were inclusive and respectful of all narratives…”

Well, to tell you the truth, a Aire, I think some of the State’s own initiatives were not “respectful of all narratives” – but that’s another story.

Anyway, the book is out there now and by a curious string of events, my picture ended up in it – nach ait an mac an saol.

Ar aon nós… bhí mise ag freastal ar Scoil Samhraidh an Phiarsaigh i Ros Muc anuraidh agus, mar chuid den chlár, thug mé léiriú ar togra ealaíne a bhí idir láimh agam fhéin agus Nuala Ní Fhlathúin i gcomhair le muintir Ros Muc ar feadh ráithe.  Bhí Nuala tar éis ealaín suiteála a chruthú thíos ag Loch an Turlaigh Bhig don deireadh seachtaine agus thaispeáin mise an gearrscannán nua a bhí cruthaithe agam mar chuid den togra.

Nuair a bhí an chuid fhoirmeálta thart agus an phobail ag scaipeadh, d’imigh mise agus mo dheartháir (Fearghas) trasna go dtí Teach an Phiarsaigh aríst. Bhí soilse fós ar lasadh ag Scoil an Ghort Mhóir ach bhí muidne linn fhéin i gcoim na h-oíche. Chuir muid an teilgeoir ar siúl agus sheas muid ansin, le sceitimíní do-inste orainn, agus muid ag faire ar na h-íomhánna thochtmhara ag teacht agus ag imeacht ar binn tí an Phiarsaigh. Is féidir an scannán a fheiscint thíos faoi seo. (muna féidir leat é a fheiscint, ba chóir duit cliceáil isteach sa bhlag fhéin)

Buíochas le Dia, bhí an aimsir tirim, bhí an oíche galánta agus d’oibrigh gach rud gan stró don ócáid speisialta seo. Tá níos mó eolais faoin togra ealaíne ar an mblag:  “Ag Seasamh an Fhóid”  (an chéad nasc thíos)

Is beag duine a raibh a fhios acu faoin eachtra rúnda seo – is cinnte nach raibh a fhios ag an aire nó ag an RIA faoi!
