Spectrum of Activity

There’s an interesting show on at the moment, entitled: ‘Spectrum of Activity’, in The Black Mariah, upstairs at the Triskel Arts Centre in Cork city.  It’s an open submission show that was selected and co- curated by Pádraic E. Moore and Ian McInerney.  The idea for the show stemmed from Moore’s research into the seminal colour theories of Johannes Itten (1888-1967).  It was the curators’ intention to bring us closer to Itten’s aim of  “penetrating the world of colours and appreciating visual perception for what it is – an act of mystic concentration”.

My painting below: ‘On Reflection No.4’  was selected along with 12 other pieces.  Miranda Blennerhasset had a quiet wall painting which enhanced the stairs and entrance to the gallery, Meadhbh O’Connor had an installation with plants, test tubes, a light source and prism (which created an artificial rainbow) and Niamh Clarke’s piece (seen above), an installation of glass tanks, funnels, water, inks, and submersible pumps, was a constant source of interest with its subtle shades of blue, green, turquoise and maroon.   The show continues until the 17th of September.  More information at : www.theblackmariah.com
